The virus that causes AIDS is called HIV, which stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. HIV is a retrovirus that measures around 100-150 billionths of a metre (4 millionths of an inch) across. It is too small to be viewed with an ordinary microscope, but can be seen clearly with an electron microscope.
